Indian River High School (Delaware)

Indian River High School is a part of the Indian River School District, located in Dagsboro, Delaware in southern Sussex County. The school district is one of the largest by land area in the State of Delaware. The district was formed in 1969 by the consolidation of several smaller districts including the Selbyville, Frankford, Dagsboro, Lord Baltimore, Millsboro, and Georgetown school districts.

Indian River High School participates in athletics in the Henlopen Conference and is one of the smaller high schools based on enrollment, thereby competing in the Henlopen South.

Indian River High School is one of two high schools in the district which also includes Sussex Central High School in Georgetown.

Remained an all-white school called John M. Clayton until 1967, long after Brown v. Board of Education.

Alumni

Indian River High School alumni have attended schools such as Boston University, MIT, RIT, Swarthmore College, Cornell, UNCW, William and Mary, and Vanderbilt University, as well as many of the local colleges in the area. Many alumni also hold prominent positions in the community and state of Delaware.

Athletics

The Indian River High School Indians compete in athletics in the Henlopen Conference. They are one of the smallest schools in the conference, based on enrollment, and thereby compete in the Henlopen South. The Indians have won 5 state championships with the latest coming in Football in 2011. The other football championship came in 1988. The indians have also won a chapmpionship in basket ball in 1980 and 1981 and have also one a championship in softball in 1998.

Football

The history of the Indian River Indian's football team goes as far back as 1963 with their first win in the Henlopen Conference when the school was known as John M Clayton. In 1969, the state split the schools for football into two divisions.[1] Indian River was placed in the Henlopen South Division in the conference and have won 14 division championships. Indian River's last southern division title came in 2011.[2]

The 2011 high school football season came to a close in grand fashion. Indian River claimed the Division 2 state championship beating Caravel, 35-13. Quarterback Jamie Jarmon had 3 rushing touchdowns and also intercepted two Jonathan Welch passes. The Indians cap off a perfect season at 12-0, winning their first state title since 1988.[3]

MCJROTC

The Marine Corps Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps. is one of the many other extracurricular activities. The Drill Team and the Rifle Team have won countless awards for parades and competitions, as well as many other events.

Other Sports and Clubs

Clubs included are: Band, Chorus, BPA (Business Professionals of America), Wise Guys, The Leo Club, NHS (National Honor Society), Math League, Academic Challenge, FFA (Future Farmers of America), JDG (Jobs for Delaware Graduates), Student Council, MCJROTC (As listed above), French Club, Science Olympiad, Soars, Yearbook Club, and KBG (Kick Butts Generation).
